Samsung Fridges Allegedly Fail to Maintain Safe Temp - Top Class Actions

Two Samsung customers are suing the South Korean electronics giant and its American offshoot for allegedly defective refrigerators that “pose unreasonable risks of property damage and serious personal injury during normal use” by running above temperatures for safe food storage. 

The refrigerators in question have varying model numbers, but all are made with French doors and a bottom freezer.

The plaintiffs are Matthew Jordan and Lisa Saghy, both of whom bought new Samsung refrigerators. In both plaintiffs’ experiences, repairs by a Samsung technician failed to remedy the temperature issue. Now, they claim Samsung refuses to provide more repairs, replacement or refund. 

Jordan and Saghy seek to represent a nationwide class, a California subclass, and a Pennsylvania subclass to include all residents who bought a new Samsung refrigerator or otherwise acquired one, primarily for household use and not for resale.

Jordan bought his new Samsung refrigerator for $1,298 in 2020. After a few months, he began to notice food in the bottom of the refrigerator was frozen while the top of the refrigerator held a “temperature that was too high to be safe for food storage,” according to the complaint.

Saghy bought her new Samsung refrigerator in 2017 for $2,256. In January 2022, she began to notice the refrigerator was not keeping food and drinks as cold as before and ice was forming on the back panel. In March, a technician told Saghy the temperature issue was “a known defect” and “cannot be fixed,” according to the complaint.

The Samsung class action lawsuit alleges the company knew about the temperature defect but concealed it from consumers while continuing to sell the product.

Between January 2019 and December 2021, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) received over 600 complaints about Samsung refrigerators, according to court documents. At least 211 complaints cited food spoilage; 62 cited food poisoning, according to Consumer Reports.

I have had my refrigerator for just over 30 days. Had a technician out this week and it still is not fixed . Milk and other food is expiring well before its date . Temperature in fridge going as hight as 50 and as hight as 20 in the freezer.

I NOTICE THAT THE REFRIGERATOR HAD ICE ACCUMULATED IN THE BACK AND COMING THROUGH THE CUTS IN THE BACK AND IT WASNT AS COLD AS IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN… MILK GOT SPOILED AND FOOD WAS GOING BAD. I CALLED SAMSUNG AND ASK THAT I RESET THE FRIDGE FOR 5 MINUTES… DID THAT THE NEXT DAY IT WAS GOOD BUT QUICKLY REVERTED TO THE TO THE SAME WAY IT WAS. SO I DEFROSTED IT FOR 2 DAYS AND IT WORKED FOR 2 WEEKS AND AGAIN REVERTED. FOOD GETTING SPOILED SO I CALLED A SPECIALIST AND HE INFORMED ME HE COULD NOT WORK ON DUE TO THE CLASS ACTION SUIT WHICH I WOULD LIKE TO JOIN

Our Samsung does not keep food frozen. It is a side by side french door style and just stopped freezing food. Food is cold but everything defrosted and I had to throw away my entire freezer for fear of food poisoning. I noticed it a few months ago when my sons frozen eggo waffles were as flimsy as a piece of bread. We have been unable to use it and NOONE is able to repair it.

We have the same issues. Not even a year after we had the fridge the freezer constantly freezers over and we are constantly have to repair it. The ice melts and the ice maker just freezes up.

Can I be added to the lawsuit?

Same issue with my samsung rf31fmesbsr. The back panel freezes and then the fridge fails to keep temperature. My home warranty company replaced the part three times before they stopped replacing it as apparently “manufacturing design defects” are not covered. How do I join this lawsuit?

I bought French door Samsung fridge with bottom freezer in 2016. The fridge continuously collected ice at the back and couldn’t keep food cold. Spoilage happened 4 or 5 times within a couple years. Everything in the freezer was freezer burned. Had to finally replace it.

I have the French door bottom freezer RF260BEAESG/AA which does not maintain a safe temperature. Bought 1/17, It clunked and smoked 5 months after purchase and then food started spoiling. Temperature was around 50. it took 2 weeks for their repair person to come out. They said it just needed to be reset. They reprogrammed to 34 but it never gets lower than 40+. The dishwasher bought at the same time stopped working the next month, the main computer needed replacement. Please add me to the class action.

My 1 1/2 year old Samsung RF28K9380SR/AA Refrigerator does not work at all. Samsung sent repair out 3 times. It’s still not fixed. Samsung agrees that it needs a sealed system compressor repair Their repair company has repeatedly asked for a 7,000 number to be issued deeming the unit non-repairable. I’ve been fighting this for 3 months now. I need a solution NOW!

Now on 5th icemaker replacement and it is starting to drip water & not freeze ice solid. Rear panel in refrigerator has been replaced twice due to ice formation.

Temperature not being held at a safe level; especially the top shelf. Normally above forty two degrees.

We have the RF4287HARS/XAA. We purchased in 2013. Starting 2016 (?) Every 2-3 months our food begins to spoil and the temperature stays at 46 degrees. We keep a thermostat inside the fridge to monitor the temperature. We have to empty the refrigerator and thaw out the back panel using a hair dryer and/or overnight. We know because our milk goes bad and other food grows mold! We have had numerous repairs and replaced the fan twice. We have replaced the ice maker too.

Several hundred dollars of food spoiled multiple times. I also had a samsung dryer that completely fell apart -the big drum fell to the floor….I was told no parts available and not expected for indefinite time so I had to replace a 5 year old dryer…..

I own a Samsung 4 door Fridge that I have to defrost (just the Fridge part) every 6~8 weeks if I want to keep my food from going bad and I’m getting pretty damn tired of having to do this. I’m tired of replacing parts (i.e. fan, main control board and added a secondary heater line to help the defrost cycle but it still freezes up) just trying to fix it which I’ve figured out it can’t be done and so I wonder why is Samsung still selling these when they know they don’t work?

I never hooked mine up and have iced drawers ,sounds like an airplane ready to take off ,water all over my floor and have to take apart and get the ice frozen in the back wall of fridge and temp drops I have called ,filed complaints and still nothing . It’s not a repair issues it’s a defect .

Please add me, we had temperature problems along with freezer problems, our Samsung microwave also broke after 2 years as well as a Samsung dishwasher that was deemed “unfixable” after nine months. They never would honor the warranty and I had to hire an attorney to get a refund for the dishwasher. Never received a dime for fridge or microwave. We just replaced them.

How do we get added to this class action? We’ve had our icemaker fixed twice and it’s currently frozen over and leaks under crisper drawer and becomes a huge ice cube. Last time a tech came.out I was told he couldn’t do anything about it, that this was a repetitive problem with this Samsung fridge and to unplug it and let my fridge defrost for 48 hours…but that it would inevitably happen again. Food either freezes or goes bad…

Please add us. We bought Samsung french door in summer 2018, started same problem since 2019. We bought new other brand fridge today because we can’t handle it anymore. Paid over $2500 for only less 4years. Unacceptable.

I purchased a Samsung fridge in 2017 and I had to purchase a new fridge in 2021 for this reason. The back cooling panel kept freezing and no tech would come out and fix it. I spent over $3000 for this thing to have to turn around and buy a new one 5 years later… I was so pissed.

Please add me. We bought ours new in Feb 2020. Fridge started making loud noise in 2021 on and off. In May 2022, We had to take everything out of the fridge for 3 days to allow the ice in the walls of the fridge to melt to allow the fan to start moving again. We thought it was just us. Now I see this is everybody! We called for a repair and were told it would cost us $250 for the visit alone. We contacted Samsung and they told us that we were no longer in warranty and would need to pay. Our fridge works fine for now. But, we will defrost the fridge every month to avoid this. and…DON’T BUY THIS FRIDGE!

Bought a Samsung side by side in Nov 2020 stopped getting cold in Jan 2022, they tried fixing it and now said it was unfixable as of May 2022 and will not fix or replace it.

We had the exact same problem. We bought a french door refrigerator in September 2019 and it developed the problem in 2020. It was first fixed by Samsung and the problem reappeared and then we fixed the problem through a private technician who also couldn’t fix the issue. After trying many things the technician told us that this problem cant is fixed. I have lodged the claim to Citi as the refrigerator was bought from Costco.

We have the same problem with ours..it does not keep accurate temp..gets ice in bottom of refrigerator..freezer gets ice build up in the bottom and cannot open the drawer without clearing the ice…this happens about every three months..would like to replace before someone becomes very ill from spoiled food but that’s a lot of money we can not afford right now..samsung should be ashamed and refund money or replace appliance

Came with my house when moved in. Samsung sent out a tech 3 different times over 3 months to repair it, it took that long because they had to wait for parts. One of the times the fridge just stopped working all together. At that point we went and bought a new fridge because we where constantly losing food if we bought any, and needed to be able to have food in the house to feed our young children. They closed our ticket because the next time they came out we had moved it to the fridge and they said they will not work on it if it wasn’t in the house. Wouldn’t offer a refund or anything.

Ongoing issues with this appliance. We have had to replace the motor 2 times and it still freezes over. Constant draining to the bottom drawers, the ice make is always frozen over and never makes ice.

Yes I have a Samsung French doors with freezer on bottom and it does not keep my food cold like it should. My ice bin gets ice build up in the back and stops making ice and then leaks water under the deli drawer and also freezes up. I finally broke down and purchased a whirlpool. I had a repair guy come out and he told me about this class action lawsuit. I will be joining in to it. The fridge doesn’t cool.Two of Samsung repair men came to fix the issue, but said we were opening the fridge that what spoilt the cooling system. My story is the same as everyone else – ice maker frozen over all the time, back panel and fans frozen so food temps inside close to 50 with outside indicators never changing. Tons of spoiled food, time and effort to try to fix. Ended up having to get a new frig.

When I contacted the company they said to fix it and they would pay for it. First…no one could fix it…Second….they more or less said “not our problem” but were nice about it!ha

Please sign me up, I had to replace my Samsung refrigerator double door for the same reasons. Now, my ice maker on the current one I had over a year put out dirty ice! I had to get use not using ice or buy bags of ice.
