If you’ve been holding off on purchasing a new iPhone and have been stuck using an aging model, it’s time to look no further. It's officially new iPhone season and we’re focusing on the $799 iPhone 14 and the $899 iPhone 14 Plus. Yes, it's the return of the Plus with a new large screened iPhone that’s destined for the masses.

After Apple wrapped its September “Far Out” event, I got the chance to briefly play around with both of these. So read ahead for my first look, what’s new, and, of course, how to preorder these iPhones.

One important thing—while both the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus are up for preorder beginning 8 a.m. Eastern/5 a.m. Pacific on Sept. 9, they will begin shipping on two different dates. The iPhone 14 arrives on Sept. 16, while the 14 Plus will ship on Oct. 7. Both devices, like the 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, are E-Sim only and don’t feature the physical SIM card slot.

Both the 14 and 14 Plus are available in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB sizes. There are five colors to pick from as well: blue, purple, starlight, midnight and a vibrant (PRODUCT) RED. Via carriers—AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon included — you can score up to $1,000 off with eligible device trade-in.

You can also trade-in your current iPhone with a service like Decluttr to score some extra crash.

If you’re looking for a new design and coming from an iPhone 13 or a 12, don’t expect a full redesign. As a whole, the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus continue to feature a rounded, modern design. These phones still look great and sport durable glass and aluminum builds. New for 2022 is some good news for repairability—the back glass can actually be repaired separate from the rest of the phone. I’ll also say that the new shade of purple is fantastic.

Over on the front, you get either a 6.1-inch or 6.7-inch OLED display that delivers vibrant, accurate colors and it was a joy to use in the demo room, even under bright fluorescent lights. It’s still a 60Hz screen as well and still has a notch at the top for Face ID. Tucked inside that True Depth Sensor is an updated front facing lens that is capable of autofocus and as a whole delivers crisper images.

And that leads us to the rear setup—there’s a new 12-megapixel wide lens that is similar to that of iPhone 13 Pro from last year, and it boasts a larger sensor to capture more details. It also comes with a 12-megapixel ultra wide lens. However, both of these lenses will see improvements thanks to a new “photonic engine” which increases the image pipeline and what the camera is capable of capturing. You can expect some major low-light improvements as well as more colorful images. I’m eager to test this out in greater detail later. For videos, there’s a new Action Mode which is essentially stabilization on steroids.

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus will of course run iOS 16 and benefit from all the new features including the ability to edit iMessages and a redesigned Lock Screen. Powering the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus is the A15 Bionic chip that was inside the 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max last year. Essentially, it has an extra core over the iPhone 13 and 13 Mini. I fully expect these to provide excellent performance as well.

A new element here is the ability for the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus, come November, to connect to a Satellite for emergency calls. It’s a first and could come in handy when you’re in an area without any cell service or Wi-Fi. It’s similar to another new feature that Apple hopes you’ll never have to use—Car Crash Detection. This uses sensors—like accelerometers and gyroscopes—along with microphones and a trained algorithm to detect if you're in a crash, and ping the authorities as well as emergency contacts. Apple’s really focusing on safety this year, easily making the iPhone even more indispensable.

Year over year, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus aren’t the craziest changes ever made. But a new larger size will make a lot of folks happy, especially those who want a larger screen but don’t want to drop a ton of cash. I’m also eager to see how the camera upgrades perform and to test out the all-day battery life. On that, Apple’s promising the longest battery life of any iPhone from the 14 Plus.

If you have a 13 and aren’t craving the Satellite connectivity or camera improvements, there likely isn’t an immediate need to run out, though trade-in deals do make these very affordable. But if you’re sitting with a 12, 11 or an earlier phone, it’s an excellent time to consider an upgrade.
