The former post office building on Pennsylvania Avenue in Weirton has sat vacant for years, but that is all about to change.
Surrounded by family and friends, as well as local officials, Friday morning, Teddi Maslowski of Burgettstown announced her plans to convert the structure at 121 Pennsylvania Ave. into an agricultural marketplace.
Maslowski, whose family has owned and operated Birch Creek Farmery for 100 years, explained the operation has been a dream in the making, with the goal of providing fresh, quality products for purchase and to showcase local agriculture.
“Everything is going to be local,” Maslowski said.
The plan is to open in time for Thanksgiving, starting with options for fresh meats and dairy products, including cheeses, before expanding to jams and jellies, baked goods and an open-concept commercial bakery offering coffee, breakfast sandwiches and more.
She said there are plans to add an outdoor patio for dining and possibly evening concerts or other events.
“We’re really excited to be in Weirton,” Maslowski said.
In opening the market, Maslowski also is finding more ways to carry on her family’s traditions.
Birch Creek Farmery began as a dairy farm, but a few years ago expanded to include other meat producing animals, including Berkshire pork, Galloway beef, Icelandic lamb, pastured chickens and some seasonal selections.
“We try to use every part of the animal,” Maslowski said, referring to it as a “tail to snout” approach.
Renovations to the old post office are under way, and Maslowski said there are plans for every inch of the building, including using the basement for freezer storage and planting bee-friendly vegetation outside, while trying to keep some of its existing character.
