A car park will be lost to allow the extension of a Lidl supermarket which will welcome the installation of an in-store bakery.

A planning application submitted to Ribble Valley Borough Council to increase the size of the Lidl in Shawbridge Street, Clitheroe, has been accepted with conditions, with the extension allowing for the installation of an in-store bakery.

The German chain, which has a number of supermarkets in the region, will be increasing the shop's space by around 10 per cent as well as creating nine designated staff parking bays in the pay and display car park on the corner of Waterloo Road.

The pay and display car park on the corner of Waterloo Road will be closed to make way for the extension

A report to the planning committee reads: “Lidl are constantly reviewing their existing store estate and as part of this process are continually seeking to improve their store offer for customers.

“The proposed extension will create an in-store bakery and freezer area.

“The proposal facilitates the modernising of the store, creating a functional and aesthetic consistency between Lidl’s Clitheroe store and the design of the company's new food stores, known as the ‘New Store Concept’ which are currently being brought forward across the country.”

The shop submitted a similar planning application which was accepted on December 4, 2017, but as the work did not go ahead in the designated three year time frame, the planning permission lapsed.

As part of the approval, Lidl have been ordered to comply by a number of conditions including the building work taking place in three years; the materials used to be in keeping with the existing building; to install and keep the proposed landscaped areas; to not clear any vegetation during bird breeding season; along with a number of other conditions.
